If you put your mind to learn a new language but you don’t know how,
If you have tried several times, but failed and gave up,
If you really need to learn the language,
Here are my GOLDEN RULES of learning a new language:
- You need to be persistent
Always have your goal in mind.
Remember why you started, this will motivate you.
This is really important: don’t spend 3 consecutive days without studying the language. This will tear you apart.
- Work on your skills
Don’t be fixated on only one way of learning. Improve your reading, listening, writing, and comprehending skill together and gradually.
Try to find your weakness points and work on them before moving to the next session.
- Vocabulary matters
Even if your grammar isn’t so nice, your vocabulary will save the day. Trust me I have been there.
Watch movies and listen to music in the language you are trying to learn. After some time, you can even start reading books in that language.
Always use multiple dictionaries; monolingual, bilingual and if you know other languages, have a dictionary notebook where you will translate the word in multiple languages which will help you to remember it easier and to improve the other languages that you know at the same time.
- Put it in use
“Practice makes perfect” always practice.
Make dialogues on your mind.
Try finding a talk-friend that you will only communicate in that particular language.
Read the news in that language.
Imitate the sounds you hear or the writings you see on the books. (This really helps when it comes to symbolic languages like Japanese)
- Believe in yourself
There is simply nothing you can’t do if you put your mind to it.
“The best way to achieve the impossible is to believe that it is possible”
These are my golden rules of learning a new language. Hope you liked them. Remember, you don’t need to see the arrival point to take the first step.
